Taking care of our minds is an act of strength, and a prominent topic in today’s society. In a world that tends to prioritize work and drive, we often forget to take a step back and focus on our mental well-being. Personally, I have struggled with anxiety since the fifth grade. When school shootings were on the rise, much like they are now, I struggled feeling safe in school. I sought professional help where we came up with breathing exercises and ways to calm me down when my anxiety was heightened. I was feeling vulnerable and sad; I even met with my principle numerous times to discuss ways to make me feel more comfortable. Inspired by me, he introduced the “Buddy System.” Whenever I went to the bathroom, or nurse, I was allowed to bring my “buddy” to navigate my anxiety and minimize the times where I was alone in case of an emergency. It is an unfortunate reality that as a 10 year old girl, my anxiety was at its peak, simply out of fear that the unthinkable might happen in school. I use my story to advocate for the importance of mental health. Us individuals should view mental health as a powerful outlet for self-care and wellness. Putting our mental health first can lead to navigating life’s challenges in a healthy state of mind, and always remember you are not alone. There is help and there is hope out there, you matter <3
